ING NYC MARATHON

Shannon will be participating in the 2006 INC NYC Marathon on November 7th. She is nervous, as she is a beginner to the sport of running (she began running in July). However, it is a goal that she wants to fulfill, and she is ready to go out there and give it a shot! Some news updates from Shannon:

- My final performance was last Saturday in Portland, OR at the Hilton Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular and will air on NBC, 4pm-6pm EST, on December 24th (Christmas Eve)

- Just taped a segment for the Today Show that should air the week of Thanksgiving (most likely Nov 20th).

- My show on CN8 The Comcast Network “Gymnastics USA with Shannon Miller” just started taping it’s second season and will begin airing November 26th with the 2006 World Championships: Women’s Team Finals

Q&A:

Q: In a previous answer, you stated that having the experience with law school could help you with your career in gymnastics. How do you feel that law school will help with gymnastics, and what do you hope to do in the future with the sport?
A: Law school has been really good for me. It’s definitely tough to keep up with the schedule but I know that I’ll be glad when I finally get my degree. Although my interests are more in business than the actual practice of law, I think the law school has taught me not only about the law but mostly it’s taught me a different way to think about things. Law school teaches you how little you really know. It’s very humbling in many ways.
I think this education will help me no matter what I do in life. I already apply it to my own work by knowing things to look for and questions to ask. I don’t think you can ever go wrong having a law degree. But I am looking forward to being out of school and being able to focus on broadcasting, speaking and pursuing my interests in the health ad fitness industry, especially getting children involved with physical fitness.

Q: You are actively involved in beam clinics across the country. Have you ever considered coaching Olympic gymnasts the way that Steve coached you during your career?

A: That’s a natural question that I have been asked since the day I stopped competing. I love teaching beam clinics and working with kids and there coaches on “clean-up” and basics. But I also have a lot of other interests. I have spent most of my life in a gym and I have loved it. But I want to be able to get out and see what other things I can do and what other areas I can help people. Right now I have a lot of opportunities open to me and I want to see where the lead me. Something like my television show is great because I get to be part of the gymnastics process in a way that hasn’t existed before. Usually there are 2-3 events televised a year and Comcast gave me the chance to put gymnastics on the air every week. I’d like to work on getting even more gymnastics out there so people can see how great the sport is even in the four years between the Olympics.

Q: What is Steve Nunno up to these days? Do you still see him around, and is he still coaching?

A: Steve has some exciting plans in the works right now but I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag. He is doing well and spending time with his family. He also opened a gym in Norman, Oklahoma called Stars Gymnastics.
